Lake Mead Christian Academy is a nursery through 12th grade school that just celebrated its 20th anniversary. Something unique occurred this past year as the US economy suffered decline and the Las Vegas Valley was hit especially hard. A donor became concerned about this impact to the school and generously offered scholarships that would fund over 20 additional students. As the news of this blessing was shared, it inspired another donor to fund 3 students. Then another donor followed for 2 students, and several others selflessly contributed toward specific education-related expenses for particular students.
These initial gifts were given to LMCA students who without them would have been unable to return to the school this year. Currently, there are over 60 students receiving monetary enrollment assistance by means of private scholarship dollars!
Though most gifts were given anonymously, the enormity of the donors’ love and support is known throughout the LMCA. It was with great joy that the school was able to inform the recipients of the availability of financial support making it possible for them to re-enroll or remain enrolled. An outpouring of appreciation and emotion was expressed through email, phone and face-to-face conversations which were then communicated back to the generous donors.
One unexpected blessing was revealed in this show of love and support as each recipient had humbly and openly revealed their financial need and allowed the LMCA community to richly bless them. There was unabashed joy demonstrated and our relationships grew stronger.
An Idea is Born
As we reflected on this outpouring of support, people taking action to provide Christian education for others, we thought of many who though unable to sponsor 100, 50, or even 10% of another student’s tuition, would still like to be involved in some way. About this same time, we learned about an organization that was coordinating micro-finance (small loans) using technology to connect dreams to donors.
And so an idea was born! Several school leaders began working to create a tangible way for donors to make Christian education a reality for those who desired it but were unable to fund that dream. Eaglegg.org is a micro-philanthropic, web-based endeavor that gives every person the opportunity to participate in providing scholarship money by making donations, large or small (micro). The process is simple but thorough beginning with a confidential application confirming a bona fide financial need. The next step includes posting the story and the need which then allows donors to click and give. Once a recipient has been funded, we encourage them to share the good news and in turn become involved in someone else’s dream.
